Reflections
The most important lesson I have learnt in my UIR journey would be practical 6a & b which is evaluation of internet resources. I find this an important lesson because this can help me evaluate on a site which I will be using in future. The evaluation criteria include Purpose, Coverage, Authority, Accuracy, Currency, Accessibility, Presentation & Arrangement, Usability and Overall Quality. These evaluation criteria for a site are important as it can help us compare the different sources and decide on which is a better sources for our own purpose. The evaluation criteria can help us make a decision on whether the source is reliable based on the information provided and where the information came from.

Before I pen down my last entry on UIR, I want to show my gratitude towards Ms Faridah who has been guiding me through this UIR journey. This journey will be a tough one without her guidance. She has been patient all this while guiding me and clearing my doubts. Without her reminder of asking the whole class to update our blog regularly and working on our portfolio consistently, I'm sure I won't be able to produce my portfolio on time. Not forgetting, Ms Faridah is making every lesson which she had conducted interesting and enjoyable for us. One word to describe Ms Faridah she is a WONDERFUL teacher.

Thanks Ms Faridah :D I'm sure to make use full use of all the knowledge I have learnt in UIR whenever I'm doing research through the Internet. The UIR knowledge I have gained will be valuable in my life.



For this particular activity in this practical, we are supposed to visit http://www.talkingcock.com/. I still can recall during this practical lab session, Ms Faridah showed us a video on Dick Lee singing a songs which reflected about Singapore. I will show some reflections as a Singaporean upon seeing this site.

Reflections
As a Singaporean upon seeing such sites, I will feel very irritated. Especially when the information provided on the site is insulting about Singapore. To what I think, information provided on this site can be joking about Singapore, but they must have their own limits and not go beyond the limits. Some information on this site is far too insulting. To Singaporeans who think that this site is a good site to criticize Singapore, I feel that these Singaporeans need to do some reflections. How can a Singaporeans talk bad about their own country? Don't they feel ashamed? On the other hand, this site may be a way of relaxing for some Singaporeans to look at some jokes provided on this site. To me, I would not be encouraged to introduce this page to my friends. I may not visit this site frequently unless I really need somewhere to take a break. (:
All in all, this site has its own strengths and weakness. Some may think this site is appropriate while some may think it is inappropriate. People have their own opinions no matter what they think about this site.



For this practical session, we do not need to attend lessons as it is E-Learning week. But without having the need to attend lesson, we need to do something in return which is that I need to submit my individual summary of my research findings.

I have chosen 1 of the relevant resource which is http://www.getforme.com/index.htm out of the other search results for the other 2 search facility. I have chosen this resource for my individual because this is the only relevant sources I can find.

Reflections
By submitting my individual summary up on http://www.uir-rawkz.wetpaint.com/, this this enables my group mates to find out more on my research topic. They are able to know more about the impact of Integrated Resorts on Singapore's Tourism Industry. On the other hand, I am also able to gain more knowledge on my group mate's research topic. This is also beneficial to the public as it does not require any login for viewing. Users who are not login are not able to edit the contents. Only login users are able to edit the contents. Wetpaint is quite similar to discussion forums as they also include social networking features. It only differs from the lesser topic provided and wetpaint are usually for users who want to collaborate online. After this lesson, I have found a site for free hosting service. All thanks to this practical. :)

Evaluation of the website & the most important criteria
This website had given me countless of information on my dream holiday to Europe. The most important criteria I used to get information about this site are Coverage and Accuracy.
Coverage is the most important criteria in such circumstances because the information provided must be comprehensive so that when I visit Europe, I will not face any difficulty of getting more information about the places I want to visit. This site covers a wide variety of information which is needed by users like me from the flights schedule to accommodations, places of attractions, restaurants, photos, guides, trip and a lot more.
As for accuracy, the information and facts provided on this site must be accurate and reliable. If the information provided were not accurate, I will have difficulty when I arrived at the place of my destination. The site is also free from grammatical, spelling and typographical errors.

Why I choose Europe?
I choose Europe as my dream holiday destinations for the reason that I love visiting places which have gorgeous sculptures and buildings. Apart from all the sculptures and buildings, I am very attracted by the London Bridge in London. From the London Bridge, I am able to have a nice view of the scenery, sunrise and sunset in London. Apart from all these, I am able to have a feel of how the four seasons feels like in London as Singapore does not have four seasons. I wish to go to Venice as well because I find Venice very interesting which has many beautiful buildings. More to mention, not forgetting The Grand Canal in Venice! I love the colours of the water as their water there are much more cleaner than the water in the canal of Singapore. Last but not least, the beautiful sun rise in Venice. I cannot resist the temptation of having to watch the sunrise and sunset in Europe (:

Reflections
From this practical session, I have learnt how to evaluate internet resource by using the evaluation criteria. The evalution criteria includes Purpose, coverage, Authority, Accuracy, Currency, Accessibility, Presentation & Arrangement, Usability and lastly the Overall Quality. All this criteria come hand in hand to make a website stand out from the others and to maintain their visitors. For this practical session, 4 & 5 I am going to identify the different types of Internet search facilities and evaluate the effectiveness of the different Internet search facilities.

Firstly, based on my research topic, I must choose the relevant keywords. I have chosen impact, Integrated Resort and Singapore's Tourism Industry as my keywords. With these keywords, I have come up with keyword variations. For impact, I have influence, effect and repercussion. For Integrated Resort, I do not have any keyword variations. As for Singapore's Tourism Industry, I have Singapore's Tourism Market as my variations. With all the keywords variations, I have implemented a search phrases to search through the 3 search facilities. The search phrase would be (impact OR influence OR effect OR repercussion) AND Integrated Resort AND (Singapore's Tourism Industry OR Singapore's Tourism Market.

The 3 search facilities are mainly the Search Engine, Meta Search Engine and lastly subject directory. The 3 search facilities I have used would be as follow

Subject Directory: http://sg.search.yahoo.com/dir

Among the 3 search facilities, Yahoo Search Engine has the most hits as compared to Meta Crawler and Yahoo Subject Directory. Meta Crawler was ranked the 2nd for the number of hits followed by Yahoo Subject Directory. Even though the search hits by Yahoo Search Engine was as high as 324oo hits, but this search does not took a long time, it only took 0.49 seconds. Although Meta Crawler has narrowed down the search hits to only 44, there was no relevant source which is relevant to my topic. As for Yahoo Subject Directory, there was no search results found.

Therefore, I can conclude that Yahoo Search Engine is the best search facility for the time being for my research topic. Yahoo search engines provides me with many different sites which thus giving me an opportunity to choose the best site which is appropriate to my research topic. As compared to Meta Crawler, although they provides me with less search results which in return save my time on going through all the sites, the search results provided were rather irrelevant to my research topic. Nevertheless, I must say that each search facility have their own strengths and weakness. Each search facility provides relevant or irrelevant information is based on the keywords the users had typed.

I do not have to attend my first lesson in week 3. I am suposed to do E-Learning and post up my answers for practical 3 worksheet. So here I am! :D Practical 3 consist of 2 activities. First activity would be identify the purpose of any four resources I have retrieved. Second activity would be the e-shopping spree.

Purpose- Advocacy
Reasons- This site is a discussion forum. It allows users like me or the community to interact with one another. For instance, I can discuss the impact of the Integrated Resort(IR) on Singapore's Tourism Industry on these forum. In this way, people from this community will be able to share their own thoughts and views with others on this issue. From this discussion, I will also be able to know whether residents and non-residents support the Singapore's Tourism Industry for having IR in Singapore.

Purpose- News & Information
Reasons- This site allows me to retrieve past articles which are related to the IR on Singapore's Tourism Industry. Furthermore, this site also provides me with information on current events which may be related to my topic. The information provided by this site as they have cite down the source of the article. It also provides factual information as they are extracted from the newspaper.

Purpose- Information
Reasons- The purpose of this site is that it provides me with factual information. The article they provided me was a speech made by Mr LIM HNG KIANG, MINISTER FOR TRADE AND INDUSTRY on 16 April 2007.

Reasons- I classified the purpose of this site under personal mainy because he penned down his personal view on accessing the economic impact of having IR in Singapore. The writer also provide his personal information on the article he had wrote.

If I have $500.....!!! ;D

If I have $500 to spend on E-Shopping Spree, I would like to buy a Creative Zen 8 GB MP3. It would cost me about $249. With the surplus of money, I would save it up for other purposes.

This is the Creative Zen 8 GB MP3 I'm talking about. I would want to buy this as this mp3 is handy enough for me to carry it along with me to wherever I go. (:


Reflections on Practical 3
This lesson has taught me the purposes of internet resources. There are 6 purposes of internet resources in all. For information purpose, the sites provide factual information. As for advocacy purpose, those sites are created to influence public opinion and on the other hand also allow people to comment on their views. Furthermore, business/marketing purpose sites are constructed to promote a porduct or service. It may also include catalogues, offer online services and etc. For news purpose, the sites are usually developed by traadition companies such as newspaper broadcast, book companies and many more. It also includes CNN, BBC, Straits Times and more to be mention. For personal purpose, these sites are owned by individuals for different reasons. Subjects on these sites may range from whimisical to serious in nature, e.g. information on certain statistics. Last but not least, entertainment purpose.Entertainment sites are established to provide enjoyment. It provides such as games, jokes, movie clips and etc.

With all that I have learned from practical 3, from now on, when I visit any sites, I know what what the purpose of the sites is. The sites were created for certain purposes. Everyone have their purpose when searching the net. Nowadays, without the internet, I won't be able to survive. Internet has became part of my LIFE....



Practical 1
During practical 1 session, we were asked to choose our topic for our portfolio. The topic I have chosen would be Discuss the impact of the Integrated Resort(IR) on Singapore's Tourism Industry.

We were supposed to look out for websites that will be related to our topic. I have found 3 websites which are categorised into discussion forums sites, electronic journals and magazines sites and last but not least, WWW site.


Discussion Forums- Discussion Forums is an internet(online) forum which hold discussions. Usually an entire community or to a specific sub-forum will be discussing on a particular topic. I do think that discussion forums can come in handy when someone is in need of opinions or comments on a certain topic. The entire community also can discuss on the topic and make a comparison on which opinions is better.

Electronic Journals & Magazines- Electronic journals and magazines may be the electronic version of a printed publication like the newspaper. Electronic journals and magazines keep me updated on the latest news and the news that are published can be trusted. When I have the time, I usually visit "Today online" (http://www.todayonline.com/) which is the electronic version of the Today newspaper to take a look at some news. This saves me the hassle of buying newspaper.

Reflections on Practical 1
I hope to get relevant and trustable information for all the sites I have found. Practical 1 is fun and I am always looking forward to each lesson. Now that I know that websites can be categorised into various categories like discussion forums, electronic journals and magazines and WWW sites.


Practical 2
For practical 2, I am supposed to search for sites which can in return help me in my portfolio. I have found 2 sites which are classified under Personal WWW site and Organisational WWW site.

Personal WWW sites- Personal WWW site are maintained by an individual person. The topic in personal WWW sites can be any topic that is related to the owner's interests, materials on a specific subject or it may also be part of an organizational page. Information provided by personal WWW sites may or may not be trusted as sometimes the opinions was given by the owner itself.

Organisational WWW sites- Organisational WWW sites are a collection of WWW pages which are created and maintained by a particular organisation. The same goes to organisational WWW sites. Some information provided by organisational WWW sites are not trustable as the information are collected from various WWW pages.

Resource Description - This site tells me more about the impact Singapore will be facing 2010 after the 2 IRs in Singapore is completed, new opportunities are created when the IRs are completed, more accommodations needed, increasing air-capacity and lastly dealing with the manpower demand.

Reflections on Practical 2
After attending practical 1 & 2, I got to know that sources available on the Internet can be classified into various categories. I have learned how to identify which categories these sites belongs to. In addition, I have also learn that citatations are needed to acknowledge if I get any information from any sites. As far as I know, an inadequate citation constitutes plagiarism. Citations are an essential feature in a research work. I have learned the format of citations by using APA style as well. The format of citing internet resources using the APA style is as follows; Author's last name, First name. (Date of publication: year, Month day). "Title:capitalize only initial letter."
